If you are an EU citizen and you are going to start an internship in Spain, you must have completed two procedures: the Foreigner Identity Number (NIE) and the Social Security Number (NUSS). Without these two documents, the company can't legally pay you a salary. The insurance of the company does not protect you and the Spanish State can't provide you the same benefits as a Spanish worker. So, these procedures are crucial.

Procedures to get a salary in Spain with the NIE and NUSS

Since we published the entry in the blog about the NIE and the NUSS, many interns are asking us for help with procedures and documents.

The Spanish administration is not prepared to support E-citizens that don't speak Spanish. You will need help to find the right offices, prepare the online appointments and fill in the forms. Unfortunately, the online interface and the documents only exist in Spanish and not in English. Further, the Spanish public servants don't normally speak English. Here you have a step-by-step guide to help you during both procedures.

NIE Procedures

In the case of the NIE, you must prepare the appointment before traveling to Spain.

NUSS Procedures

We recommend you go directly to the Social Security Office immediately after getting the NIE. It will be faster for you and you can complete all the procedures the same morning.

If you follow these steps, you will not experience any legal or procedural difficulties during your internship. You will have the same rights in Spain as the Spanish students.
